The Complete Railroad Crime Cases of Scientific Sprague (Deluxe Edition)

The Complete Railroad Crime Cases of Scientific Sprague (Deluxe Edition)

For the first time: one of early pulpdom’s most popular scientific detectives is collected in a comprehensive deluxe edition. Originally appearing in the pages of Street & Smith’s The Popular magazine, Calvin “Scientific” Sprague was a US Government chemist who battled robber barons, saboteurs, criminal syndicates, and the menace of fantastic weapons using his own arcane methods of scientific detection and advanced technology as the train lines stretched West. It is very possible that memories of Scientific Sprague may have been a hitherto-unattributed inspiration for Street & Smith’s later scientific detective creation, Doc Savage.

Written by Francis Lynde, the first half of the Scientific Sprague saga was collected in hardcover soon after publication in The Popular magazine, but the rest of the series has—until now—remained unreprinted. This deluxe edition includes over a dozen Scientific Sprague adventures, along with illustrations taken from the stories’ appearances in newspapers. This deluxe edition also collects dozens of examples of Francis Lynde promotional advertisements, reviews, and author profiles.

The Return of George Washington (The Argosy Library)

Lawrence Galloway, managing editor of New York tabloid The Daily It, was given the exclusive story of the experiments of Professor J. Hendricks Morgan, whereby he had perfected a system which would resurrect the dead… provided he have access to the subject’s skeleton and a cost of one million dollars. The test subject was decided by the readers of The It, and after the bones of the First American were taken from Mount Vernon, a young man calling himself Colonel Washington stepped from a glass case, asking for General Braddock. How would the world of 1920s America react to the return of George Washington?

The Return of George Washington was one of the main inspirations for the Doc Savage novel Resurrection Day written by Lester Dent, himself a long-time Argosy reader and fan of fellow author George F. Worts.

The Moon Pool & The Conquest of the Moon Pool (The Argosy Library) by Abraham Merritt

The Moon Pool & The Conquest of the Moon Pool (The Argosy Library)

Surrounded by crumbling Cyclopean ruins, the Moon Pool was a place of both horror and wonder. No Polynesian race had constructed it. Sacred yet accursed too, the spot was far older then recorded history. As was the luminous thing that dwelt within its unfathomable depths, a transcendent being summoned from its ancient slumber by the cold rays of the full moon.

A. Merritt was one of the pioneers in the field of science-fantasy fiction. A Munsey magazine mainstay, he electrified readers of All-Story Weekly when it published “The Moon Pool” in 1918. The haunting tale of supernatural wonder created a sensation that led to a novel-length sequel, The Conquest of the Moon Pool. This Altus Press volume collects for the first time the original unrevised versions of these now-classic tales, illustrated by the incomparable Virgil Finlay.
