Gary Hoppenstand is an American scholar of popular culture and popular fiction. He is a professor at Michigan State University, where his research and teaching include popular culture and literature. He has published widely on popular fiction and edited classic-novel editions for Penguin Classics.

Hoppenstand has written on pulp fiction and adventure genres, including the chapter “Genres and Formulas in Popular Literature” and the book Critical Insights: Pulp Fiction of the 1920s and 1930s.
