J. Allen St. John
James Allen St. John (1872–1957), usually credited as J. Allen St. John, was an American artist, author, and illustrator. He is particularly remembered for his images accompanying Edgar Rice Burroughs’s fiction, including the Tarzan and Barsoom stories. His painting and drawing helped shape how generations of readers pictured the characters and settings of adventure and science-fiction narratives.
St. John also illustrated books and magazines beyond the Burroughs titles, with work appearing in pulp publications including Weird Tales and Amazing Stories. He began his career in the early twentieth century and continued illustrating popular fiction across several decades. His distinctive, dramatic compositions made him one of the best-known illustrators associated with classic adventure fiction.
