Charles Dye
Charles Robert Culbertson Dye III (1906–1973) was an American illustrator whose western experience informed much of his work. Born in Cañon City, Colorado, he worked as a ranch hand before pursuing art, and later studied and worked in commercial illustration. His paintings and drawings appeared in pulp magazines including Adventure and Argosy, where western subjects were a recurring focus.
Dye’s familiarity with ranch life gave his western illustrations a basis in firsthand observation. Beyond pulp covers and interior art, he produced commercial work and illustrations for popular publications, spanning the heyday of magazine illustration into the postwar period.
